No Shout-Out for Shouting

An article in this week's The New York Times stated that "shouting is the new spanking," and the story cites a study that says 88 percent of 991 families surveyed "acknowledged shouting, screaming or yelling at the kids at least once ... in the previous year." I think the other 12 percent of the families are either lying or in need of the Nobel Peace Prize.

  1. You know what they call a kid whose parents don't yell at them every now and again?

    The defendant.

I sometimes try social services cases in juvenile court, and some of these kids, as young as 7 or 8, have no fear of adults. No fear of parents, police officers, judges. They just don't care what anyone says. They're going to do whatever they want. It's astonishing.
